Congrats! You’ve started a new business! Now here is a list of a million things you NEEEEED! …. Everyone has a suggestion about something that they say you need. That you can’t run a business without.
But what do you really need? More specifically, do you really need a website?
I have an surprising answer for you. Not necessarily! Especially at first. What do you need first? Paying customers! It really depends on your business what you may need before a paying customer can walk through the door. If you are a dance/martial arts/yoga studio you need space, floors that won’t kill people, mirrors, and sound. If you are a performer you need training, a resume, and to get your butt to some auditions. If you are a virtual coach, you need knowledge, a computer, microphone, and (if applicable) a bit of space.
Right… I know I am making it too simple. There will be other things. But my point is the main thing you need is to get your new clients through the door (or virtual door). That doesn’t always need a website.
Now, you’ve got some clients through the door. You need to start providing them information. Maybe a class schedule? Automated enrollment? Simple business info that goes beyond a business Facebook page? Now, you are likely going to need a website.
Here are 7 top reasons to INITIALLY get a website for your business.
- It makes you legit (shows your really exist)
- It reflects the services you provide
- It helps a client decide if you are the right fit for each other
- It provides credibility (the site and the domain name)
- It helps you share information (schedules, announcements)
- It makes your life easier (automated forms, enrollment, store, calendar)
- It showcases your business with photos, videos, and other content
I know reason 6 is that it makes your life easier… but all of the reasons save you time. They are all things that you would otherwise have to work to show. Printing flyers, calling students, entering info, emailing schedules, broadcasting yourself manually. Save yourself the time.
Once your business has started rolling a website is the next step. But how do I get a website? Do I build one myself or have one built for me?
