You are ready for a website for your business and the inevitable question arises. Should I build it myself? With all the platforms out there claiming you can easily build a website yourself for very little cost it is easy to wonder if that is true. Can I really build one myself? Will it suit my needs?
I’m going to be really honest with you. Yes, you can build your own website. Yes, WIX is awesome!!!!! Seriously, so many templates and you can put your logo and branded colors on the site. There are many functionalities. I haven’t tried the others but I’m sure they are pretty decent as well.
So why does 35% of the internet use WordPress and not a site builder? Why do most businesses hire a web developer to create their site? Why do a lot of businesses hire a web developer to maintain their site? It comes down to a few things. If you look through this list and these things don’t pertain to you … then build your own! It is kinda fun actually.
Note: I am going to use WIX as an example of a site builder site. It’s probably one of the best ones out there and covering all of them seems like another post all together. I will use WordPress as an example of a site a developer builds for you because, honestly, if someone is charging you good money to create your site, it should be on WordPress. My opinion of course. I am not an affiliate of any product I cover in this article. PS: I love fine print. It is so fun to write.
Most business owners don’t have a ton of time. Am I right? You are building a business. You are needed by everyone! You don’t have a full staff of teachers yet, you have to take care of all the registrations, announcements, emails, etc. You are also the janitor, wardrobe mistress, music editor, videographer, counselor, and so on and so forth. Hiring someone to build your site eases your time a bit. There is someone to help you by putting together your site, keeping you focused on what you want to share on that site, putting your vision to life. You don’t have to deal with the learning curve and you can focus on what you do best.
When you have a WIX site you don’t own your content completely.
“As a Wix user, you waive any claims that you may have against Wix with regards to your site being used in marketing or promotional material.” https://support.wix.com/en/article/wix-site-and-content-ownership
If this can potentially cause any issues with the content you have on the site (photos of students for example) you may want to build a site on WordPress where all the content sharing is controlled by you completely.
But WIX is free! Well, not necessarily. If you have your own domain this will cost you each month. If you have ecommerce setup this will cost you per month. If you have a lot of video, this will cost you per month. There is a laundry list of addons that you will likely need in due time. This creates a monthly cost that can overtake the monthly cost of hosting a wordpress site (mid range example is Siteground, which is currently ~$5/mo to $15/mo depending). So in the long run you may not save any money. It’s also nice to know you can scale up what you have at no additional monthly cost.
Hey, didn’t I just mention how customizable a WIX site can be? Yes, I did. And yes, these site builders can be very customizable. BUT, we are all artists and sometimes we want that extra glint of personality. That touch of style and capability that these templates just don’t provide. Sooo … you purchase addons. And the monthly cost goes up. Or maybe your idea just can’t come to life via a builder like this.
WordPress is completely customizable. You can do anything! Granted, some of those razzle dazzly items slow your site down. But a web developer can help you navigate that and get your site working smoothly.
A WIX site is hosted by WIX. This means your site will not be the fastest loading on the block. With WIX you are stuck with whatever their hosting is capable of that day. Also, it is not simple to transfer your site to another host. You basically have to copy the content over and build a new site.
SEO is not optimized out of the box with WIX. That is also an addon and it can’t be tailored as well. When you have a developer create a WordPress site for you they will ensure all of your photos have alt text, keywords are listed properly, you have a site map, you have google analytics setup properly, your site loads fast, use heading tags, and all those good things that optimizes your site to reach a higher ranking on the search engines.
Back to cost, if your site if performing better on the search engines, you are getting more site visits, you are getting more online enrollments and you are earning and saving yourself more time and money. That’s just the honest truth.
Ok, so your read all this and now you think WordPress may be awesome! It’s perfect, you can customize everything and make your site sleek and swift. Life is good forevermore and birdies are singing at you doorstep!
Yes .. No … Kinda? Okay, WordPress is robust. It can do it all. But it uses things called plugins to add functionality. Most of the time these are free sometimes they do cost. It is not easy to learn WordPress so doing it yourself cannot always be a good idea especially if you are busy (and let’s hope you are).
Plugins need updated or they don’t keep working right. WordPress needs updated or it may not keep supporting the plugins you need. It also may not be as secure of a site if you let the plugins go without updates. I think of this like I think of Windows updates where they always have patches that keep us secure in the ever changing digital world. We can’t assume that a site can sit on the web for months or years with no updates as the internet world changes drastically around it.
But still, updates are a drag. Your web developer (or Google) can teach you the safe way to backup your site and run updates regularly. But, if you desire, your web developer can likely maintain your site for you. That would entail them keeping the site up to date, dealing with any hacks or security issues that happen, handling the hosting and ensuring forms remain functional or videos links still work. This cost plus hosting can easily run as low as your WIX monthly fee. Hmmmmmmmm. food for though.
Back to my first point
That being said, and I know it’s a lot I said, those WIX sites look great. They will be a nice online presence. They can help you get started. They may be everything you need. That is up to you. That is something that may change as you grow.
Don’t rule it out. Please browse around. Look at different articles and opinions. Check out the sites themselves. Play with creating a site and look at what is an addon.
